NaturCarotene is obtained from Dunaniella Salina, a microalgae that does not have a rigid cell wall, allowing a better digestibility compared to other microalgae species such as Chlorella or Spirulina.
Depending on the culture conditions, the carotene content can be modified. Concentrations up to 10% w/w on dry weight basis can be reached.

Natural β-carotene is required either through market demand or by health regulation. Other natural sources generally contain one or two carotenoids in lower concentrations, wheras Dunaliella contains a range of carotenoids with wider applications.
Products with supplementation of a natural β-carotene source, suggests that 9-cis β-carotene acts as an in vivo lipophilic antioxidant more efficiently than does all-trans β-carotene (synthetic carotene).
